Lighting by Others is first and foremost a photography company but we strive to approach projects from a personal standpoint rather than business. We can make your experience more personal in a number of different ways. We can walk through projects with you and allow you to express what is most important and how you want to showcase the project. We can also take our direction from an architectural plan, or just discuss your design with you and take photos that best represent what you have identified as important design elements.

Photo-Manipulation

An important part of digital photography is what happens in the “digital darkroom” of computer software. We often must take the time to tweak and adjust the photos to best represent the design. This is a result of the difference between the way our eyes view something and how the digital camera views it. Sometimes, to best emulate what someone would see within a project, a digital photo must be enhanced with computer software and/or multiple exposures of the same image.
In some cases, more work is required to make a truly unique photo that really draws the eye. A common example of this is replacing the sky in an exterior photo to one that is more dramatic. If mother nature provides a clear blue twilight sky the resulting photos can be less spectacular than if scattered clouds are bathed in the red and orange hues of sunset. If desired, we can easily take sunset photo of our own and seamlessly integrate it into the background to create a dramatic and memorable image for your marketing material.

I continued to explore graphic design and photography while completing my Bachelors of Science in Architectural Engineering with an emphasis in illuminating engineering from the University of Colorado at Boulder. As part of my academic studies, I gained knowledge in topics such as psychology of perception, optics, and of course, illumination.

While attending The University of Colorado, I began more seriously testing my abilities with photography in my day to day life. I expanded my selection of cameras and began to experiment with subjects and various techniques. In my time at the university I also acquired a bachelor of science in Architectural Engineering with an emphasis in Illumination Engineering. Throughout the courses in illumination engineering, students learn many technical and biological principles that allow them to understand light and the way the mind perceives it. These principles are often thought about by photographers because the camera behaves similarly to our eyes. With this knowledge of light, biology, and architecture I am able to capture the feeling of a building or space in a timeless photograph.

Composite imaging is a service we can provide you with to aide lighting mockups and renderings. By capturing a scene several times using our manual control we can provide you with images that show the relative brightness of different fixtures. Or, we can combine several mock up images into an overall lighting rendering.

Video recordings of your dynamic architectural or art installation is something we do not currently offer, but we are looking to add in the very neat future.

Architects, builders, interior designers and finish carpenters strive hard to create a project that is not only structurally sound, but aesthetically pleasing. As the final link in that chain of craftsman, our architectural photography strives to represent their collaborative efforts.
